But! It looks like Johannes Oppermannnn & perhaps Mikael Tysvær are up for it. If you can muster 1 or 2 more, you've got a game!

http://www.gulix.fr/blog/spip.php?article460

So, here's a link to my french blog.
It's the first day of my advent calendar, with each day a "creation" or translation, related to gaming. It's coming from 8 days ago.

It's a game based on Swords Without Master. Its title is ... wait for it ... "Les enfants du Vagin", aka "The Vagina's Children" in english. Yep. Not easy, but it was a contest with a fake novel cover generator, and I got this. And I was tasked with the creation of a one-page RPG.

Now, to the game. It takes place in a uchrony. Napoleon's France and Great Britain have pursued wars during decades, and it's now the 1950s. Technology is looking at the atom, with some kind of Rocketeer. The wars are over, but the spy game is on. Both sides "control" nearly half the planets, through colonies and allies. It's another kind of Cold War.

And there's superheroes. Project Marvel for Great Britain, and the AGIN (Agence Gouvernementale des Individus Nouveaux) for France. The Ve AGIN (called the "Vagin") is a squad of only women with powers. And it has disappeared. Official news calls for treason. And you play ... the Children of these women.

Some day, years after the disapperance, the Nurse (some kind of intendant for your mothers) comes to you. You are in danger. Bad people will look to you. You must run and hide ... and discover the truth !

That's it for the background. It will be rewritten and expanded / corrected in a future version, but that's what I provided to the contest. And it uses the SWM engine.
Perilous Phase see the Children running away from danger, or maybe confronting it.
Discovery Phase is about looking for the truth and discovering the world. The children have not seen much about it.
Rogues Phase become Children Phase, where Children ... well ... do Child Things against bad adults.

It's a start, as the Phase are strictly the same. The tones, however, are different : Espiègle / Responsable, or in english : Mischievous / Responsible. I think that reflects the "Orphan Children" tone of the game.

Also, the Heroic Feats have been tweaked. The Children don't have powers ... but the Nurse give them some Stim, that can provide bursts of power with them. That's what copy the Feats.

Whoa, I've written more than I thought ^^. The game is in french (cause, well, I'm kind of french), but if there is interest in it, I will try to provide advancements about it here.

Thanks for reading !

Folks, if you're familiar with Mastodon the social media (as opposed to the mammal or the band) you can find me at: dice.camp/@epidiah

If you're not familiar, Mastodon is a bit like a Twitter-substitute with a 500 character limit. It does some neat things with localizing control. For example, instead of joining Mastodon as a whole, you join an instance which is usually made up of a collection of like-minded folk. The https://dice.camp/ instance is dedicated to tabletop gaming with a healthy contingent of roleplayers.

I'm new to the whole Mastodon thing, but enjoying it thus far. I'm particularly intrigued by the 500 character count. Especially, intrigued by the rogues you can write up in 500 characters. But it might be a bit tricky since, with punctuation and spaces, at least 76 characters are already accounted for:
Eidolon:
All that Deserves a Name:
#SwordsWithoutMaster
Glum:
Jovial:
Trick:

Might save some characters by just linking to the eidolon and labeling the trick by it's name instead of both "Trick:" and it's name. Also, no shame in trimming "All Deserving a Name:" down to "Names:" The #SwordsWtihoutMaster hashtag is vital, though. Mastodon is only searchable by hashtags. Might even want to slap a #Rogue on there, too.

Anyway, I'm going to give it a shot and I invite you to join me. Hit me up on dice.camp when you get there.

Sunday Morning Swords!

Sunday Morning Swords!

It has been too long.

Who is ready and willing for a glum/jovial tale this morning?

Friday, November 10, 2017

Not so long ago, I posted here the characters I made for SWM, intended to be played during a Convention.

Not so long ago, I posted here the characters I made for SWM, intended to be played during a Convention. There were in French. Well, the convention (Utopiales, biggest SF event in France, around books and movies and stuff) ran last weekend, and I played 6 games, amongst them 2 of SWM. My first 2 ...

It was a blast ! Thank to you Epidiah for making this game. Those two games were great. Especially the ending, with the reincorporation that worked so well. Just an example :

The adventure took place in a jungle, with animated plants, a strange path leading to a Snake temple, a big Jade stone guarded by a giant snake, that the adventurers slayed to take the Stone. Now is the end game (an Adventurers Phase) ...

First player (Show us how you get us out of the jungle) reincorporates "Strange path in the jungle", the Path leading them to a camp of rebels, lead by the infamous "Rakshasa", and not to their starting point.

Then, the next player (Show us your connections with the Rebels) tells the party that, being a former slave, he has connection with the rebels. He reincorporates the Mystery "Who controls the plants ?" by answering : Rakshasa, who needed to lead us to his camp.

Then, the following player (Show us how you get us back to a civilised area) reincorporates the elements about the Big Stone. Because Rakshasa needed that Stone to fund his rebel campaign against the Big Bad Green Emperor ^^. And some of his men will in return lead the adventurers out of the jungle.

And the final player ... would not reincorporate. He was sad ... But I tell him about the epilogue and he get a Gloom one. His character was the violent warrior, searching blood for his demonic patron. He told us the departure of the party on a road leading out of the jungle to a crossroads. His character looked to the others and the guids, and told them he would walk his own path, alone, on the other road ... But that wasn't the true ending. Walking back to the rebel camp, he would go stealthly to the Rakshasa tent. He didn't like to be played like a toy ... And that was it !

The second game was as much a pleasure ! Can't wait to retry the game, the players were very pleased too (one came back the day after just to thank me and be reminded of the name of the game).

Hi folks, I've finished my read-through over at rpgg. I don't think I'll continue through the Advanced Game chapter because I don't wanna spoil it for myself before playing!

Any vets here who have graduated onto elements of the Advanced Game feel like commenting over there please do! I guess what we're looking for are things like tips/tricks. What's a good idea to ease into, etc.

Roll For Your Party (https://rollforyour.party) has gotten a pretty major update and a few minor ones:

* New dice graphics!!! Jesse Ross graciously created amazing SVGs for all of the dice (including all the DCC funky dice!)
* Jesse also created a new token image as well - now when you double click it a black circle shows on it instead of it turning white. (Though there is a checkbox to do the white token thing if you want.)
* The color of the arbitrary-size dice (XdY) will now match the rest of the dice.
* Fixed a bug where sizing for added images wasn’t respected.

Well, I've got a question prior to my first game.

Well, I've got a question prior to my first game.

How can I play a meeting between Rogues and a NPC (let's say a merchant-prince with whom they have kind of a debt) ? There's no such thing as a "Dialog Phase", but how would you play it ? Is there out of the scope of Swords without master ? Or could a Perilous Phase be structured around a dialog (with a menace as the Thunder ?)

Bonjour les Aventuriers ! Oups, sorry, pardon my french ^^.

Bonjour les Aventuriers ! Oups, sorry, pardon my french ^^.
I'm a french gamer, and I will soon host some games at a convention (Utopiales @Nantes). So I'm preparing Rogues in order to jump right into the adventure. You can see them on my blog. I stole some Simulacras here, other elsewhere.

The process of creating a Rogue is very entertaining and rewarding for a creative mind. Just for that, thank you !

* Speaking of rerolling… If you hold down shift while selecting things it will prevent you from accidentally rerolling anything.
* Even more rerolling news: the button is now green! (I got feedback that people didn’t use it because they didn’t notice it.)
* Added a visible count of the tokens out on the “table.”

#RainyMorningEdition

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread for #SundayAMSwords. All are welcome regardless of familiarity with the game! Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When folks get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. Folks will probably wait until 9:30 EDT to start the last group. If you can't make that, check back in a few hours—this week I will be personally playing around 9 PDT, or noon EDT.

Use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias. And bring your breakfast or brunch. Adventurers need their sustenance! And coffee.

Hi folks

Hi folks ! I'm preparing to run Swords Without Master in a Conv in a month. I've made up a "Tone Card" that you can see here. The Gloom one is being made (already exists in French, but thought it would be good in english too). Goal is to have such card being flipped during the game, with the Inspiration Words for the Tone visible for all players.

As I'm playing with the French version, I may have forgotten some relevant words, or added some not so correct. You can participate in updating the list.

I'll try a print soon to see if the colors are correctly rendered. The final file should be available on DTRP at the cost of PWYW.

EDIT : now on DTRPG - http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/223233/Glum-Jovial-Tone-Cards

* Minor UI improvements and bugfixes.
* Support for funky/weird dice from DCC. (Though no custom images… yet.)
* Double-clicking (ie rerolling) tokens will set them to the color white, doing it again will set them back.
* Double clicking the labels for inputs (eg “d6” or “tokens”) will get you a single one of those.
* Move multiple selected things as a group. (Long press on the last selection (the one you move the group with) if you happen to want them all to end up in a single stack. Then click “reveal selected” (if what you selected wasn’t hidden) or “hide selected” (if it was hidden) to deselect the stack.)

Roll For Your Party (that online multi-user dice rolling thing) has been updated in a variety of ways to improve your dice rolling (and card drawing) experience:

* Color choices stick: now when you choose Orange as your die color it will stay that way until you change it again.
* Choose to have dice sorted or not.
* Custom sets (ie custom decks/pools): Have a set of images you’d like to use as a randomized deck? (Tarot cards perhaps? (https://gist.github.com/shanel/e8e1e41f7a92c6a89172ccb7643eff4e)) Make a list of all the urls to those images and paste it into the form!
* Hidden draws: When pulling cards from the playing card deck or custom sets you can choose to have them only visible to you until you explicitly select and reveal them. (Yes, you can re-hide a selected card too.)
* You can save the previous roll’s inputs.
* Modifiers are now a thing.
*Fixed a bug where extra Aces would show up in a re-shuffled deck.

So I made a thing...

So I made a thing...

It's a dice roller that creates a custom URL for your "room." You can then send that to the friends you are playing with and you can all watch/use the same dice at the same time... You can move the dice around real-time, group them, delete some or all of them, reroll some of them, etc. (It should make playing games like Dogs in the Vineyard and In A Wicked Age easier...)

I think it would work great for Swords Without Master too. My reasoning being that you can create labels which you could have for each character and the Overplayer. You could put those around the screen and then just have the two dice get moved around between the labels depending on who was "holding" them...

Other cool things it does:

* Supports open (ie not hidden) playing card draws (no jokers though)
* Safety Tools! Buttons for using John Stavropoulos' X-Card and Brie Sheldon's Script Change tools
* Double click already rolled dice to reroll them (perfect for SWM)
* Set a background image (great for maps or play mats or eidilons!)
* See totals of last rolled dice and of all dice on the table

It is still very much in beta, so if you run into issues, take a look at https://github.com/shanel/roller/issues to see if your problem is there, and if not log it!

If you get some use out of the site please consider making a donation to http://www.shantibhavanchildren.org/

Happy rolling!

Season 2.5 is now up! It includes a look at the design development of Epidiah Ravachol, a detailed discussion of the design of Swords Without Master, a seminar led by Michael Duxbury on Acquiring IP Licenses and designing genre in rpgs, Ric & Robert Carnel at the 200 word rpg playfest, and our views on the Best RPGs for Beginners joined by Joanna Piancastelli and a host of British roleplaying luminaries.

(So my recent fatherhood has greatly reduced my playing time and delayed a third season. However, Rob and I have put together this content to serve as an interseasonal to tide us over.)

#FireInTheSkyEdition

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread for #SundayAMSwords. All are welcome regardless of familiarity with the game! Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:30 EDT to start the last group. If you can't make that, check back in a few hours.Occasionally there are other games firing up later in the day for those who wake at a more civilized time. If you don't see one, feel free to fire on up yourself.

Use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias. And bring your breakfast or brunch. Adventurers need their sustenance! And coffee.

The Tale of Two Weddings, Interrupted

Miguel Zapico as Dario: https://plus.google.com/110571442854327851279/posts/cLvckC79KHG
Keith Stetson as Hypatia: https://plus.google.com/113990765511580864989/posts/7Y5CChJE7dJ
Epidiah Ravachol as Overplayer

Our rogues, unsure of which gem on the royal wedding gown is the one they seek, steal the whole gown. The guards give chase and Dario calls butterflies from Hypatia's blossoms to carry them over a chasm. But each butterfly melds into a gem and flutters off: ill gotten gains scattered to the winds. Who else is looking for this gem?

The rogues flee into the catacombs beneath the city gardens and enter a huge, octagonal library, its caretaker an abomination made of the parts of its former librarians. Hypatia's vines tie her her Dario together and they meld to become one destructive force that smashes the golem and distracts the guards. Bits of the golem crawl around the library still, they say.

A week later our rogues stumble from the city, bedraggled and road worn, and find themselves in the midst of another wedding. Dario plays a jaunty tune, but the song has different meanings in the groom's culture than the bride's. He takes offense. Know your audience before you start strumming, Dario. Hypatia tries to smooths thing over by singing the correct lyrics to the groom, but he becomes infatuated with her over his bride; a merry tune taken wrongly, twice.

Infuriated, the bride calls down a giant moth to carry the groom away. Sparks from the bonfire trace butterflies around a bride. The lost butterflies land and take their former shape. The bride is dressed in her own royal gown and armed with fork and knife; she is of the species that eats their mates. Hypatia's roots hold the drunken revelers still, but the alcohol in her veins is as flammable as any other. Fire races across magical roots, engulfing the village. Dario strums faster, fanning the flames. The bride plunges her knife into the usurper Hypatia. When she tries to pull it out, vines hold it - and her - close. Hypatia plucks the sought gem from the gown and sings the glum words of Dario's wedding song to the bride as the vines squeeze tighter and tighter...

My rogue from Jon Cole's game at Camp Nerdly and, hopefully, for #SundayAMSwords to come.

Hypatia

All that deserves a name
The Virgin Wood - My forest mother, from whom I was born, and into which no thing on two legs has ever stepped.
The 10,000 Blossoms - The flowers of the forest and their myriad effects.
Winnower - My sword, and the only thing I carry that is not an outgrowth of me. It hews through vegetation as if it were smoke.

Feats heroic
Jovial: The 10,000 blossoms bloom with a cacophony of color, dulling eye and nose with their intensity
Glum: The wood grows over everything, slowly and inexorably.

Trick Haven — A forest glen, where there should be no forest, concealed from those not by Hypatia's side.

I've been gone for a while, but here's Shades Without Mirror's current version. The City Phase has only been playtested once, and I hope the conspiracy phase makes more sense now that I've rewritten it a few times. Perilous and 'punks are unchanged as far as I can recall, but are there for handy reference.

Ahoy to all fellow masterless swordbearers!

Ahoy to all fellow masterless swordbearers!
I'd like to ask for a rule clarification: my pals Tommaso B., LorenZo-M and Lapo Luchini and I are playing our first SwM session and we are a bit puzzled on the right way to draw a Moral from the knowledge reveiled in a Discovery Phase: we are not sure on how the Rogue should draw an unintended consequence from the fact of knowing things (and not doing them like in the other Phases). I will now provide you with an actual play of the troublesome phase so that we can discuss starting from it.

I as the Overplayer set the Discovery Phase: Juvial Tone, the setting is the aftermath of the battle occured in previous Perilous Phase, the Thunder is an advacement of the one from the previous Phase: an incoming dust clouds clears up and reveals a moving four-legged castle with circus music coming from it.

I handle the Bones to LorenZo-M, whose Rogue is an elderly wizard protecting a dimensional gateway. He rolls a Glum Moral and narrates this:
New Info: this castle holds the dimensional gateway of this realm, it is mandatory we catch it to come back home!
Loaded Question: The gatekeeper visited me once; how did I send him back?
Overplayer Answer: You sacrificed a sorcerer by feeding it to your sacred beasts.
Unintended Consequence: But now I feel it: the castle-pilot is the one I sacrificed, not the gatekeeper!
Moral: The ancient rituals do not work anymore.

I then handle the Bones to Tommaso B., whose Rogue is a wandering dashing scoundrel. He rolls a Glum Moral too and narrates this:
New Info: the crystal this castle is made of is a unique material that can be carved into all sorts of enchanted items.
Loaded Question: How much will that shady man back home pay me for a chunk of crystal?
Overplayer Answer: He'll pay you with the souls of a whole army.
Unintended Consequence: (I as the Overplayer choose it due to Tommaso's lack of ideas) But sadly you notice you lack the tools to cut a chunk of crystal!
Moral: Greed and avarice rule the world.

Greetings fellow rogues!

I have been unintentionally absent for the past few months, hidden away high in my hermitage, toiling in my studies. All that hard work will come to fruition within the next month, and I shall emerge from the other side degreed and spoiling for adventure. It will be a while yet, but #SundayAMSwords calls to me from the horizon. And I thirst for its blood, glory and wonder.

Help me slake this thirst by proxy. I wish to hear of your adventures!

Wolfspell: Winter role during the pack creation

Wolfspell: Winter role during the pack creation

I hope everyone is OK with me asking questions about Wolfspell in the Swords Without Master community. I assumed it is since, in the past, there were talks about Wolfspell here, as well.

Let’s just cut to the chase. I recently read Wolfspell again, and there were some parts of the rules which I need to clarify a little bit.

1. The paragraph “The Pack” (p. 13) says:

- - -
“Decide among the wolf players who is best described by each of the following […].”
- - -

and then:

- - -
“Each wolf player should record their associated bonus or bonuses.”
- - -

‣ Does the Winter partake in the assignment of the background texts, or is it something the wolf players have to decide on their own?

‣ Does all the background texts have to be assigned, regardless the number of wolf players, or does a single wolf have to be assigned a single text?

2. Again, the same paragraph says:

- - -
“Ask each other leading questions about who you were before falling under the spell. Everyone should answer at least three questions.”
- - -

‣ Does the Winter asks these leading questions, too, or do only the wolf players?

3. Similarly, the paragraph “The Spell” says:

- - -
“Choose the spell that has befallen your adventurers and reshaped them.”
- - -

‣ Does the Winter partake in this decision or not?

Thanks for your attention. ;-)

I know I just recently posted about how to teach the game, but now I'm going to commit heresy in looking into changing a fundamental component of it.

How would you think one would go about changing this game to replicate the lone hero pulp tales of old like Conan, Solomon Kane, or Elric?

It seems to me that lone heroes and duos are far more common in classic S&S than the D&D style parties that seem to be the game's underlining assumption and while I get that from a practicality standpoint I'd be interested in trying to develop a way to widdle down the required number of players to be more Conan or Fafhrd & Grey Mouser

It'd be interesting to go about changing this game from a group activity into more of a duet of the Overplayer and Single Rogue bouncing off each other's creativity to create tales reminiscent of these old solo adventurer style endeavors. But I've not got enough of a feel for the games mechanics to do so without breaking it beyond repair yet.

Alright really curious, how does one effectively teach this game?

Alright really curious, how does one effectively teach this game? I understand you guys do it on Sunday Morning Swords but my schedule and crippling anxiety makes it difficult to join.

I read the game awhile back when I bought I bunch of copies of the magazine and have been wanting to play. I will reread the game soon but due to the language use in the rules I'm worried I won't comprehend the game enough to teach and play it.

How do you teach it? Are there any good reference or cheat sheets?

Two quick questions... Has anyone run a game of Swords in a play-by-post format?

If so, what tips do you have for the pacing and buildup within the phases?
I guess really this just pertains to the Perilous phase.

In my head it would play out kind of like Dungeon World where you announce some coming badness. In Swords however rather than wait for the player's response instead you'd wait some predetermined amount of time and if the chosen rogue doesn't respond then keep escalating the situation.

Sound about right?

So, I have run Swords a little bit. I love it, but I have a query which I don't think I have a great answer for:

I think players are not used to interrupting the Overplayer in RPG's. There have been times when I am literally a beat away from killing a character (Which in SWM, you don't do without the Rogue's permission) and no one has interrupted me!

1. As an overplayer, how do you keep bringing the storm past such a point? Any tips or tricks for keeping the storm coming and/or signaling to the rogues that perhaps maybe now would be an ok/preferred time to take the narration away?

2. What is a good ritual for polite interruption we could use on Google Hangouts... there's no physical dice to pick up.

City of Fire and Coin, the larp

City of Fire and Coin, the larp
I don't know how many of you know this, but the thrilling starter adventure for SWM is also a larp! It uses Kat Jones and Evan Torner's Parlor Sandbox system and was first run with Epi and Emily Care Boss at Intercon in 2013. Myself and tom Fendt helped Evan and Kat run it once more in 2014, I've linked what few pictures we took of everyone's amazing costumes below.

I was thinking about how much fun this was again recently, since we ran it 3 years ago this month.
