The Tones Without Master Commentary Thread
I'm starting this thread to comment on the tones folks are coming up with in this thread: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+EpidiahRavachol/posts/fonuGLxM91o
Because I really like having one tone per comment in that other thread. Don't know why.
So we talk about them here, instead of there.
I'm loving this! Totally rolling Jovial right now.
ReplyDeleteI totally restrained myself from commenting there for just this reason
ReplyDeleteFor example, I was complaining with Flavio Mortarino and Alberto Muti how "awesome" as a word has lost its meaning, I was searching for a word that conveyed the awe of being in the presence of huge monuments, or nature events, and so on.
ReplyDeleteI settled for Towering and Grandiose, but... eh.
Epidiah Ravachol have you perchance read The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach?
ReplyDeleteThinking back to it, I get a strong SWM vibe, especially the ending scene that explains/shows the wider context/reason of the main story (not spoilering anything).
I haven't, but I will!
ReplyDeleteUpon further research, it seems Eschbach had one good SF book in him, and we got it in English, so we're lucky.
ReplyDeleteJust don't read about it on Wikipedia or elsewhere: this is a case of a book that benefits avoiding the spoilers about its wider context and ending.
I may have to steal some of these for one project or another!
ReplyDeleteOne thought simmering on the very back of my mental gaming range is the idea of hacking SWM into a game about Christian mysticism/pilgrimage, but that's not something I'm prepared to write currently in any capacity.
.
ReplyDeleteI keep having to force myself to stop. This is too enjoyable coming up with them!
ReplyDeleteRenato Ramonda, instead of Awesome you could use Majestic (which I already added on the other thread), Glorious, Magnificent. Or Awe-inspiring.
ReplyDeleteYup, I thought about Awe-inspiring... Glorious is good too. I guess in part it's a language barrier thing: sometimes a word in English, even when it's an exact translation, does not give me the same feeling.
ReplyDeleteI'm adding it!
ReplyDeleteIn many ways, Swords and Worlds in general is about reclaiming the older meaning of words.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't it be Awefull ?
ReplyDeleteOr is it the same word?
Same word.
ReplyDeleteOh! And if we hit 1296 tones we'd have a miscellany squared! If that happens, I'll put together a 36-page PDF with each page containing a table of 36 tones to roll upon.
“Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
ReplyDeleteElves are marvelous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.”
― Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies
Eric Duncan one of my favorite quotes. And books.
ReplyDeleteand does such a wonderful job of showing the feelings this game Eppy is facilitating inspires in me.
ReplyDeletealso i sort of love that there is "this is the game before the game" going on in these threads
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I find interesting is how many people (myself included) are giving tones in pairs or groups, particularly complementary pairs. This makes sense if thinking that the tones would replace both Jovial and Glum, but I wonder if it makes less sense if replacing tones one-by-one as suggested in Starward. Some, of course, work either way.
ReplyDeleteI already said Whimsical, Eppy. Oh dear, we don't even have two hundred tones and we're getting repeats.
ReplyDeleteCurses! I'll fix it.
ReplyDeleteCool. I think there's plenty that you came up with in the original rules or in Starward that aren't up yet. Didn't MonkeyDome have a Zany tone?
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'm away from my computer at the moment and just posting from my phone, so I figured I would wait on those until I had a big screen to copy and paste upon.
ReplyDelete!
