Merry Christmas and Epimas!

Merry Christmas and Epimas! This will be a multi-part tale of seven rogues from the first stumbling games of our gaming group. I hope you enjoy. I will gladly provide eidolons, if you so desire - but i think it ultimately breaks up the text.

This is a tale of many rogues - It is a small saga of heroes breaking ancient bonds, of inky black ichor spilling through open eyes like baleful tears, and of curses being woven through generations with the bitter sting of unlucky ages past.

Let me tell you the dreaded tale of Skogenby. Skogenby, the storied town of the northenmost point of Anglafëll in the sainted wastes of Oeldgur, where the Chambling sea slams, bites and writhes deep into the land itself. Near Skogenby, an ancient tomb lies - a pyramid made of a hollowed-out-mountain - lies. Here, our tale of calamity and tragedy will play out. Such lay the land!

And with those words i will begin.

Chapter 1

Athothes, a priest-guard of the jackalheaded god of the dead, travels with Krummi, a warrior of an old tribe, a lithe berserker who lives under the sign of the raven, to slay the draugr queen. They come upon Skogenby a foggy morning, as hot as it can be in the cold winter months. As they tread inside the blessed log-gate and onto the bustling morning market, the rough smell of heady spices in the air assault their senses. thunder strikes the mountain behind them. Boulders fall. And then come the braying.

A horse is thrown over many streets, splintering a house to matchsticks. A woman is stuffed into a sack, and there is much wailing. Many such writhing bags lie on the back of a manbeast standing at the height of four men, like a twisting snail on top a halfman. Gaunt, with arms languidly hanging down to its knees, the blackskinned troll bellows curses towards our rogues as it claps one of its sacks hard stilling the desperate clawing from inside and daubing the linen a deep red.

Athothes pulls out his trusty arakh, a crescent sword akin to a khopesh, making the first íncantations of battle as Krummi occupies the heltroll. Not for long though, as a single lazy swipe of the brute sends Krummi flying, then tumbling against the ragged cobbled road, into a house, ribs and logs creaking from the blow. Then Athothes os charged, whom without a word, his god pronouncing the ill fortune of the troll in his stead with the wind as its voice, slices into the ankles of the fell thing. With grim determination, Krummi stands himself upright on his shield, as the troll twists and snaps its curved spine to face him. With its distended arms, it claws itself towards him, leaving Athothes in a cloud of dust and upheaved cobble, a gash cast deep in his chest. As the arms of the troll pound into Krummi’s shield, nearly splintering it on the middle, the two rogues lock eyes. with a bellow, Skefi, Krummi's trusty sword is planted like a nail in the trolls hand. Athothes senses this opportunity and lodges the kopesh sternly in scalp of the beast.

As the thing dies, it spasms and reverts back to the form of a middle-aged woman, whom with a baleful finger points to the jarls house atop Skogenby.
“you, you hateful creatures, you took my children. Curse you to the tenth generation.”
It gargles as its still functioning eye rolls up its head and thick, pink brainmatter desecrates the womans face. Dead.

Krummi sees a vision of the woman having her children taking by the jarl. She swears revenge and seeks out the draugr queen in the mountain tombs. There, she is gifted with great power and claimed as a taker of men - a troll. His conscious is slammed back into his body. He hears a raven croak, but no raven is present.

In another part of Skogenby, at the very same time, five rogues fight another troll and gains entry to the jarls house as the horrors buried under the town reveals itself to them.

Hear ye, hear ye, the rest of the tale will soon be told. (i will update the post with the next chapter.)

chapter 2

Gwydion, tree-talker, druid of the ancient woods, she who mends with mushrooms had seen in the clearest water of the lake that she must go where it went, to its end. Over the Oeldgur wastes she went, and on those fields, where winds over the treestumps howl, she met other storied rogues. A swordwielder, shrouded in endless sorrows and guilt, carrying an amulet that seemed of better times, reminding him the small glitters of good. With him came Anraz the foreboding, a maddened man in whispering armour, whose eyes shone in the hues of the aurora. As they tread the last thousand feet to Skogenby in silence, the tomb sorcerer, ancient seer held captive by his lifegiving sarcophagus, joined them. Celen was his name.

Such calamity they would bring to the town of skogenby!

As they are welcomed by the sacred wooded arch, there is the shortest moment of silence in the windblown, birdfilled morn. Then the wood creaked as if under great duress. The gategods must have cried over the illfate the bore into the town.
Just then, a ruckus arose in the other half of skogenby. And there they ran, but they were stopped. A great beast, a mountaindweller, a troll, had barred their way as it created a plaza of broken men and houses around it. There they fought it. Anraz called on the truths he had found in the book of the crystal library as he tore through the city, mutilating troll as well as the inhabitants of skogenby.

One bloodied hour later, they stand at the corpse of a trollturned lady, as Celen and Anraz are bombarbed with the heinous truth, peering deep into the mountain as the town was filled with the wails of the women and the creaking of houses falling apart. A great heartbeat echoed through their bones - the greetings of the draugr queen. The swordwielder, Zygmunt Molotch, had broken his ribs in the fight, and Gwydion rushed to his side, to grant him the boons of the woodcaps, whose spores mend the direst of wounds, Krummi came to them.

Many lie dead, and long storied names were lost that fated day. From the mountain came thunderous laughter, as if a thousand voices joined in chorus. The ground seemed to writhe as they carried the still living to the house of the jarl.

Kalaam the tithe collector

Kalaam the tithe collector

All that deserves a name
Nau'dub - the blood fed, camel-like warbeast which kalaam rides into battle for gold and treasure.

The Vault of the gilded emperor - the monastic vaults where other wayfaring collectors come to sacrifice goods and treasure for the good of the gilded emperor.

Sightless veil - diamond studded gold mask circled by a whispy, cloaked veil which serves to sorcerously unnerve those who would hide their valuables to Kalaam.

Wyrd Scales - separate scales, functioning as both weapons and tools of appraisal and scrutiny.

Wailing coffers - The unnaturally cavernous coffers in which Kalaam hides gold.

Feats Heroic
Glum - Kalaam uses the scales to transmute some thing or concept into another substance with arcane properties if compared to the first.

Jovial - nau'dub drinks and feasts on the corpses while kalaam rips valuables from their pockets, greedily stuffing these into coffers never to be seen again.

Trick
omen - an artifact of ill intent befalls someone with ill will, and the coffers will whisper of it. This will be the thunder.

I have a made community for my local friends, trying to get them to try the system. They are really loving it - some of them are normally into trad. systems, but they all love "Swords Without Master". the system also helps transition them into the system i am creating (and that system has been revolutionized since trying this, Annalise and fall of magic. Agh, the vicious circle of game design.)

Epidiah - This system is beautiful, knocks everything out of the water. Absolutely fantastic.

I am just writing this in the hope that it makes Christmas just a teeny bit brighter for you. Merry Christmas to you and every rogue out there.
Is a European group running a game tomorrow morning?

Obviously the best system for running Star Wars is Swords Without Master and obviously the best version of Star Wars to play in is the pre-production version with Ralph McQuarrie concept art, notorious space pirate Chewbacca and his sidekick Han Solo, and our hero, Deak Starkiller.

So, tell me how you would do this. What Rituals, Tales, or Campaigns would you use? Would you change the tones?

Last sunday evening I played a game of Swords Without Masters at #ArCONate2015 with my friends Flavio Mortarino (Overplayer), Saverio Porcari, and Francesco Zani.

I hope you will appreciate the sharing of my character. ;-)

Ulfgarðr

All that deserves a name

Shimosaka — My three katana.

The realm of Khitai — In the Far East.

Arakasha — The warrior code.

Ren-Shin — The temple on the sacred summit.

Feats Heroic

Jovial — Surrounded by my enemies, I throw myself in a vortex of violence and frenzy dealt with Shimosaka.

Glum — I let myself go into meditation, in front of a cup of tea, while I’m entering in communion with the spirits of the earth.

Trick

Adroit Prowess — The last wolf-warrior.

Write down an astounding capability your rogue possesses. An all-consuming battle frenzy. A whisper-quiet tread. A tongue that speaks with devils. A well-trained leopard. Before the Overplayer chooses a new phase, you may demand that it is a Rogues’ Phase and that the Overplayer opens it with a demand that highlights this feature.

So I finally sat down and read SwM and it's a phenomenal game (as I'm sure you're all aware).

Considering people seem to play it over Hangouts with regularity, I have a few questions:

1. How do you handle interruption in the Perilous Phase? Dicestream can be a bit laggy and won't necessarily show you someone has rolled. I assume it's just a "I'm rolling!" announcement, but I would like to know what works in practice.

2. Similarly, do you hit "Clear" when you're done narrating your roll or end it with some ritual phrase?

3. Is there an easy way to prominently display eidolons during play or is that not important?

Kresch

Kresch

All that deserves a name
Eternal Flame — The last ember of a dying god, preserved or imprisoned within Kresch.
Salgnak — Kresch’s treacherous cousin, a giant, non-vocal frog.
Ledger of Ten Thousand Names — A gigantic chained book, a list of all great things who have existed, with short, cryptic poetry for each. Not in alphabetical order.

Feats heroic
Glum — Kresch hesitates, remembering when they were human.
Jovial — The flame burns blue, turning Kresch’s body white-hot.

Trick
Omen — A rain of blood falls from the sky.

Borislav

Borislav

All That Deserves a Name
Lord’s Missive - An envelope, still sealed after many decades, with an ancient lord’s wax sigil.
Spur - A mechanical golem. To the uninitiated, looks like a large horse with cold gray flesh and fur. A low hum can be heard coming from its insides.
Lodestone - A small lump of unworked metal ore. When placed on a “made” object, Borislav can hear and feel the same thoughts and feelings its creator felt when crafting it.

Feats heroic
Glum - Borislav quiets his thoughts, and listens to the whispers of the lodestone.
Jovial - The jumbled inspirations of his tinkerer’s mind give an elaborate solution!

Trick
Canny Cognition - Borislav uses the Lodestone to find the true meaning behind an object.

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread. Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:30 EST to start the last group. If you can't make that, check back in a few hours. Another one will fire up at 9 AM PST for those who wake at a more civilized time.

Feel free to use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

Play by Post Redux

Play by Post Redux
Since the original post is from June, I'll start this new one.
I think this can be done by creating a separate community for the game.I have a pretty good idea of how to organize such a community here in G+ for purposes of the game.

I'm new to the system, but I think I could be the Overplayer. The PbP format should give me ample time to look at pertinent sections of the rules, if the need arises. It'll be a little clunkier than in person, but it's doable I think.

I want to get a Google Hangout game going as well, during the week, but I'll do it in a couple of weeks, as  my schedule clears up.

Meantime: Anyone interested in participating? Please reply below. I'm looking for 3-4 players. Details will follow, but I like the idea of the +1 to indicate that Overplayer should continue to escalate. Subforums in the community would have areas for posting characters, tracking threads, OOC chat, discussion, and maybe even a Reader's section, for those not playing who wish to comment.

Tagging Epidiah Ravachol , Josh McGraw , Aaron Feild , Keith Stetson and Andy Hauge  from the original thread...

Hello.

Hello.
I am in the process of organizing a local group to play Swords. I have four players lined up, but the first week, I have only two players available.

Will Swords play well with just two Rogues, or should I hold off and wait until all four Rogues are together?

Tones are difficult. There is something ineffable about their choice, the way they position the fiction, the way they orient the players’ imagination. They are the seed crystals of the players’ words, the heroes’ actions, the story’s motion.

Tones must be broad. Broad enough to contain multitudes. Broad enough that the dice do not simply decree the next moment of the tale. Broad enough that every player may find their own vision reflected in their meanings, hear how their own voice could sing in that tone.

Tones must be focused. Focused enough to drive the game where it must go. Focused enough that no tone might ever be confused for another of its ilk. Focused enough that a player is never lost, always drawn by the clarion call of the perfect tone.

Tones are impossible ... until they are obvious.

Timon the Wanderer

All that deserves a name
The ravening horde: a pack of wolves that hound Timon, occasionally thwarting him, occasionally aiding him.
Aargos: Timon’s homeland. It nows lies in ruin, as do many places where Timon has trod.
Stirge: Timon’s spear. It hungers.
The brume: when looking upon Timon it is hard to perceive him clearly. Instead it seems as if he is viewed through a mist, or from several angles at once.

Feats heroic
Jovial:  Stirge drinks deeply from those who stand before Timon.
Glum: Timon pounds the base of Stirge against the obstacle in his way, reducing it to dust.

Titus Pantheon

Titus Pantheon

All that deserves a name.
Pantheon. A mythical deer-like creatures, dark blue or black as night, and patterned with the stars. Titus has chosen the pantheon as his patronym and spirit animal, and in turn a pantheon serves Titus as a familiar. It's skin is a metaphor for the sky, and the cosmic star stuff that keeps the magical creature alive is much sought after by forces with ill intent.
The Cloak of Time. With the hood raised, Titus can slip through the streams of time unnoticed, letting eons pass in a blink, falling back through the past, or exploring a single frozen moment.
The Angelarium. A constellation of cosmic interdimensional beings who meddle in the affairs of mortals, for good, or for ill. Titus has encountered them many times; as patrons, allies or enemies. (http://www.angelarium.net/)
Musilitum’s Staff. In the early days of his line, his antecessors, humble augurs, used a crook-staff to mark out the sacred spaces in the sky, so as to divine the favor of the gods from the movements of birds. Among them was Musilitum. For her, no earthly oak or conventional ash would do; she began a pilgrimage to beseech Ein Sof, the spirit of the tree of life, for wood worthy of her ritual wand. Since its creation, Musilitum’s Staff has been passed down through the ages, each wielder imparting some of their own power to it.

Feats Heroic

Trick
Ill Fate - “Those who meddle in time and fate, or upset the orrery of astral spheres often underestimate the impact one stray thread has on the cosmic tapestry.” You may ignore one roll you just made and instead hit the overtone to suffer a Moral with a consequence that leads to this lesson.

Former Feats Heroic
Glum. Wait patiently as the peril grows, studying its every move; then in what seem to be the final moments, fall back through time armed with a parry for each thrust.
Jovial. Call to the cosmic star-stuff that composes everything; demand that it reshape itself to my whim.

Sunday Morning Swords: 27 September 2015

#ExamsOnTuesdayEdition

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread. Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:30 EDT to start the last group. If you can't make that, check back in a few hours. Another one will fire up at 9 AM PDT for those who wake at a more civilized time.

Feel free to use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

A Shock: and Swords Without Master Mash-Up

A Shock: and Swords Without Master Mash-Up

Take Swords with the following alterations to the Threads:

1. Morals are now Shock:-style Minutiae that carry a consequence. Instead of writing the lesson associated with the consequence, write the Minutiae itself.

2. Mysteries are now Shock:-style Minutiae that stymie. Instead of writing a question about what stymied you, write the Minutiae itself.

3a. Motifs elements should be about those moments that exemplify alienness, the petty made wondrous, or the wondrous made petty. Each element is also an intersection of a Shock and an Issue. This is like the grid in Shock: but you do not determine the Shock and Issue before play. Instead, decide on the Shock and Issue when you write the element and write them next to the element.

3b. Instead of echoing elements in later Motif threads, one element on each Motif after the first must intersect with a Shock or an Issue from a previous Motif thread.

I suspect that this would produce stories with more of a Swords feel than a Shock: one. Stuff like Les Maîtres du temps. And I would probably give each planet it's own set of tones, each Rogue a set of tones according to their homeworld, and if they happen to be spending most of their time in a vessel they can call home, I'd give it its own set of tones as well. Or perhaps I go too far.

Worlds Without Master Long Con

Worlds Without Master Long Con

I'm organizing a 4-session Long Con game composed of games released in Worlds Without Master taking place in one shared world. There will be three consistent players besides myself.

I'm planning SWM as the backbone, with a short session present in 3 out of the 4 time slots. My goal is to explore at least half of the released games and teach most of the Rituals from SWM.

Slot 1
Set the palette (from Microscope)
SWM
A Scoundrel in the Deep (2 concurrent games)

Slot 2
SWM
Wolfspell

Slot 3
Enter the Avenger
Masks of the Mummy Kings

Slot 4
Player Choice (perhaps No Longer With Us, or whatever's new if Eppy releases an issue in October)
SWM or Player Choice

Does anyone have any experience offering Worlds games back to back? What else should I be considering to make this a cool experience?

There was some chatter over the weekend about a #SaturdayAMSwords counterpart to #SundayAMSwords, which I obviously believe is an astoundingly good idea. The only reason SundayAM is SundayAM is because that was the time that best fit my own personal schedule. But we are legion--ovver 400 strong! And not everyone is going to have my own personal schedule.

So tell me, if you were to partake in the occasional online game of Swords, when would be the most convenient time for you? Bearing in mind that we're definitely going to keep #SundayAMSwords going and we'll definitely sweep across the calendar eventually allowing you to join a Swords game at every moment of every day should you so choose. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. This, all the other worlds, shall be ours for the taking.

FOLKS!!!

FOLKS!!!

I'm reading Michael Miller's playtest draft for #WithGreatPower   #MasterEdition  and I cannot wait to give this one a go! I'm going to go shout about this elsewhere over the upcoming week, but I thought you'd all be particularly interested.

Also, I need to publicly congratulate Michael on his Editorial Mandate section. And I need to do it before a crowd that has an inkling of just what a pain in the ass that section can be. This is the superheroic counterpart to Swords' Affordances and Constraints section. It's a necessary component of the game, and one that people can easily ignore as they read over it. But with section headers like Splash Page Supremacy and Unfathomable Psychic Depths they're going to pay attention.

Swords has been out for a year and a half now, #SundayAMSwords  is going strong after a full year, the game has been featured in the Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2015/jun/19/the-joy-of-reading-role-playing-games), and it's well on its way to becoming my best selling game.

It's time to take a few victory laps.

Here are two rituals for when you've clearly reached the story's end, but you want just one more moment to celebrate (or soberly reflect depending on the die roll) with the rogues before you fade to black.

The Ritual of the Triumph
When you are in the End Game and you find that the story has reached its conclusion, but no one has reincorporated yet, you may invoke the Ritual of the Triumph. Request that whoever has the power to do so ends the phase now. Then demand a Triumphant Rogues' Phase from the Overplayer.

All demands in a Triumphant Rogues' Phase must be about spectacle, celebration, or reflection. "Show us how trick the wily wizard into buying us all drinks." "Show us how you boast of these recent deeds." "Show us how the village receives us as we return with their stolen cattle." "Show us how you mourn the loss of your loyal steed."

You must end the game on this phase and during this phase each Rogue Player must have a single demand made of them.  This means that one Rogue Player must choose not to reincorporate and this Rogue Player cannot make the final roll. All other Rogue Players must reincorporate.

The Ritual of the Spoils
When you are in the End Game and you find that the story has reached its conclusion, but no one has reincorporated yet, you may invoke the Ritual of the Spoils. Request that whoever has the power to do so ends the phase now. Then demand a Spoilful Discovery Phase from the Overplayer.

All discoveries in a Spoilful Discovery Phase must be about treasure earned, regrets revealed, or wonders beheld. The must not extend the current story, but may hint at adventures yet to come. "I find a small, jade idol in the shape of a tortoise. Who might pay the most for such a trinket?" "In the smouldering wreck, to my surprise, I find my long lost brother's locket. What small hope do I have that he yet lives?" "As we stand on the cliff's edge surveying the lush valley below, we see a crystal pyramid overgrown with vines and jungle weeds. What happens when the light of the dawn first shines upon it?"

You must end the game on this phase and during this phase each Rogue Player must make a single discovery.  This means that one Rogue Player must choose not to reincorporate and this Rogue Player cannot make the final roll. All other Rogue Players must reincorporate.

I was talking to Emily Care Boss about the improv concept of a button, which is the note, beat, or line an improv troupe decides to end a scene on. It's a great concept with quite a bit of potential for a lot of roleplaying games out there, but Swords in particular has mechanical space specifically set aside for this.

Carefully choosing how and when to end a phase is a powerful tool for crafting your story. Being able to recognize those golden opportunities when they're handed to you is a skill worth discussing.

Ending on particularly high or low moments is a great way to emphasize those highs and lows.

Ending moments before an anticipated event gives the Overtone a chance to change and the Overplayer a chance to reestablish the scene.

Ending on a cliffhanger has obvious merit.

For that matter, ending on a Stymie or a Moral can often propel the story forward in a similar fashion.

Telegraphing when you're about to end a phase, like you do with the Ritual of the Long Spell, can sharply shape the drama of the tale by putting the focus on the roll just before the phase's end.

There's a lot to talk about here and I'm curious to hear about your experiences.

Been thinking about Rituals and Tales lately.

Been thinking about Rituals and Tales lately. I don't want to overload the game with them, but there's a lot of room to expand here and it can be done in a reasonable manner by grouping them together in packets or campaigns. We'll play a lot of games featuring Tales of Beauty and Horror and we'll rely on the Ritual of the Unseen and the Long Spell a lot. That sort of thing.

So let me ask you if you've seen patterns in your own games that could be ritualized or patterns in the source fiction you'd like to see supported by rituals, tales or the like.

I figured out who this is!

I figured out who this is!

Takeshi Shinobu
Survivor of betrayal, wanderer, seeker of final vengeance.  Bearer of wounds that will spell an early death, he refuses to give in until he has settled the score.

All that deserves a name
Hiroshi: An erstwhile friend now leading the hunt for Takeshi
The Black Lotus: A band of ronin who Takeshi crossed long ago.
Sparrow:  Takeshi's blade, the only thing he trusts completely.

Feats Heroic
Jovial: Takeshi lashes out in a punishing, ceaseless assault, a loud and wordless growl rumbling from his throat.
Glum: Takeshi sizes up the foe with icy precision, the very air itself growing still before he unleashes a single, precise strike of Sparrow.

Feat Heroic
Adroit Prowess: "Path Through Oblivion".  In the blink of an eye, Takeshi walks the spaces between his foes, cutting down all but the hardiest before they can realize their mistake in crossing him.

I'm preparing to overplay a game soon but the phases are still fuzzy to me. Could someone explain how they flow from one to the other, and how the rogue phase differs, content wise, from a perilous phase? Do the phases blend throughout a narrative unit? Let's say the rogues are discovering the world, and danger appears: do I switch straight to a perilous phase?

I had an opportunity to run Swords without master for a group of folk who play in my boffer larp, and it went really well - I was jittery because they didn't have a lot of indie rpg experience, but once we got through the first couple of phases everything clicked really well.

Something that I used that I haven't seen specifically mentioned anywhere (though I could just have weak google fu) is a bluetooth controlled multicolored lightbulb to denote the tone shifts.  I snuck the bulb into the playspace ahead of time so I could change the color with the roll of the first overtone - had a pretty good wow factor.  I think it was a cool way to accentuate the shift and folks responded well to it.

Anyone down for a game tonight?

Anyone down for a game tonight?  I'd like to try my hand at being the overplayer and using some of the aspects of SWM that I have yet to experience in my limited experience so far.

First I'd like to go with the Nexus variation of the game in which Glum/Jovial are replaced with Chaotic/Orderly. Plus I'd like to start the game off with a Tale of New Beginnings highlighting how the rogues meet. Finally, if we are able to make this a weekly thing, I'd like to use the Echoes of the Past trick to tie the games together.

I know it's a bit short notice, but let me know if anyone is interested in getting a game together tonight, perhaps around 8:00 pm Eastern Time.

“Vermin!”

“Vermin!”
A Tale of #SundayAMSwords

Opening eidolon: http://s101.photobucket.com/user/cmbeckett34/media/BONE/BoneRatsinDarkForest.jpg.html

Our two rogues and two companions, Taryb & Tomás, Ba2 & Vanora, in the forest at night. The lightning revealing numberless rat-monsters. A rat-screech echoing through the night. Ba2 paralyzed and twitching in time with sound. Taryb teasing Tomás the cat with treats, higher and higher, Tomás growing larger with every stretch.

Ba2 activating white noise to cancel the screech. A crimson lightning bolt changing the tenor of the white noise. Dozens of rats piling on Ba2 in frenzy, her noise drawing the enemies to herself. What force commands the crimson lightning?

Vanora, hauled off into the darkness toward the rat-king: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/boneville/images/4/43/Kingdok.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110808050210 Tomás stalking, hunting, terrorizing her captors. A Cheshire cat grin in the darkness. http://emblemsbattlefield.com/uploads/posts/2014/10/si0ty_1_1.jpg

Vanora triggering the instinctive fear of fiery blowtorch.

The rogues before the rat-king. Taryb singing the dirge of the demise of the rat king, enthralling him. Ba2—a misaligned knee joint causing a limp—analyzing the magic: The rat king is absorbing the power of his enemies. You're smart... for a rat. Tomás killing all the rats he can sink his fangs into. The giant cat staring down the giant rat: High noon showdown between two giants.

FLASHBACK: The day before, the rogues pursued through the forest. Vanora hiding the Bane of all Vermin: “It looks like a liver, but it beats like a heart” If the rat-king gains it, he will better serve the ends of his master. Taryb, stumbling, finding a network of metal plates and runeworks throughout the valley. It serves to make into rats.

NOW: The reinvigorated rats piling on  Tomás. The cat shrinking and shrinking, hopping out from between the frenzied cats: Schrodinger’s cat. Ba2 settling into the vicious work of rat extermination. A kick realigning the knee-joint: The healing power of beating the crap out of your enemies.
The rat-king summoning his forces to him, merging with his flesh, growing to a terrifying height, possessed by his foul master. Tomás being swallowed ... and then ... bursting out from within. The massive corpse falling, the master banished.

On valley’s edge, Vanora fitting the Bane of All Vermin into the runic network. Bits of rat-flesh dripping  off, forming living forest animals. Only one, tiny rat corpse left.

Miguel Zapico  was Overplayer. Keith Stetson was Taryb & Tomás. I was Ba2 & Vanora. Our virtual tabletop: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1IXJpAUPFWCneXQva4OOgE5ex2FKphaSYHjVgvAb4LEI/edit?usp=sharing

I just wrote this while working on With Great Power and had to share.

It's a Twist, which is the equivalent of Swords' Trick. Also, the "Villainous Phase" is very similar to Swords' Perilous Phase.

Sacrifice: “Although it will cost me all that I hold dear, I will end this!” Write down the one person, place, or thing that you value most. During any Villainous Phase, you may seize the dice and roll immediately, ignoring any stymies. However, you must also describe how your actions cause the valued thing to suffer a terrible fate.

Sunday Morning Swords: 12 July 2015

Sunday Morning Swords: 12 July 2015

#AnniversaryEdition

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread. Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:30 EDT to start the last group. If you can't make that, no worries, we'll fire another one up at 9 AM PDT for those who wake at a more civilized time.

I will attempt to attend both sessions this week, but there is a chance I will have to miss the later one. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Feel free to use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

House on the Rock in Spring Green, WI, is a world of eidolons within eidolons within eidolons, all presented with little to no context or comment.

I want to gather there early in the morning, let everyone explore for a couple hours to get their eidolons and rogues together, and then play a Swords Without Master campaign in one of it's dens.

If you only know Leiber from Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, you are missing out.

If you only know Leiber from Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, you are missing out. Here is a masterful short story about what a modern (well, 1941) ghost would be like. It pops back into my mind from time to time, usually at the worst times.

Play-By-Post Swords

Play-By-Post Swords

We discussed this a little bit a while back, and the general conclusion was that "Bringing the Storm", specifically the dice-holding player's choice of when to roll and earn the right to act decisively, made PbP SWM unworkably difficult.  How would an Overplayer know to continue escalating?  Has the dice-holding Rogue actually seen the previous escalation?

I think I just figured it out, though.  You need to be on FB, G+, or forum software that allows +ing/thanking/liking a post. The Overplayer narrates escalation incrementally, in smaller posts.  The player with the dice can simply +/like/thank the Overplayer's escalation post to indicate "thank you sir, may I have some more?", or roll and seize control.

Thoughts?  Interest in testing?

Sunday Morning Rogues!

Sunday Morning Rogues!

I will not be around for the next two Sundays, as I'll be traveling to and fro my dad's 70th birthday party. You will have to carry on the #SundayAMSwords  tradition without me. But when I return, we will celebrate our first anniversary in style!

I don't know what style yet, but revelries will be had!

I don't know what's in those ruins, but let's find out!

Hey Sword Wielders!

Hey Sword Wielders!

I'm part of role-playing gamer book club and next month in honor of her life and works we'll be reading some Tanith Lee. Join us, will you?

Announcing Volkhavaar by Tanith Lee as our July book of the month here at the RP Gamer's Book Club. We picked this book to honour the memory of this popular and prolific author who died a month ago today.

"VOLKHAVAAR is a novel of witchcraft and wonders on a world far removed from those we know. Here the gods contend for power - the Dark forces against the Light - and here an entire city and its land is plunged into the shadow of an evil beyond anything conceivable. It is the story of Shaina the slave girl and of Volk the outcast who enslaved himself to cosmic forces to gain total power - and of how they were finally to meet and clash - with an entire world as their prize."

Themes to look out for: love, dark magic, belief, pride,  slavery,

Read this book during the month of July and we'll get together to discuss it on Friday, July 31st.

Feel free to share this news with anyone you know who likes to read fantasy and then yak like a fool about it afterward!

I'm a little late to the game on this one, but I just discovered this game today. Perfectly compatible with Swords. Make your own magic system. Plus, use your spellbook as an eidolon when you're done.

Folks! Folks! The One Year Anniversary of #SundayAMSwords is less than a month away!

Folks! Folks! The One Year Anniversary of #SundayAMSwords  is less than a month away!

I want to do something to celebrate it. Of course, July 13 doesn't fall on a Sunday this year like it did last--without, of course, the application of some serious sorcery and infernal deals--but July 12 does!

What should we do to commemorate such an auspicious occasion?

“Tomb of the Paterfamilias”

“Tomb of the Paterfamilias”
A Tale of fathers of #SundayAMSwords

Opening eidolon: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/503629170807205516/

The rogues, burdened by statue of paterfamilias and his 13 young children. The grinding of stone on stone as the massive doors begin to close. Bronn and Tamen Na straining against the doors. The bas-relief carvings of 6 grown sons on the west wall step off, brandishing spears. Living statues. How could you not love ’em? Captain Finn’s double swords, keeping spearpoint from war-penguin Brikor’s chest feathers.

Tapper sending Little Yil to run, spurring the wagon-laden yak to action. Rampage of the powerful yak, smashing stone asunder! Broken statues and 2 sons still stand. Bronn’s greatsword parried, skidding across the floor. 7 grown daughters stepping from the wall. The eldest singing An alluring and drowsing preternatural lullaby.

Tamen Na pushing the paterfamilias statue between the closing doors. Enchanting song turning to painful shriek. Bronn’s sword, recovered and striking. A song ending in a shattered head.

Captain Finn charging Brikor into the paterfamilias statue. It budges not. Finn flying through the doors, penguin stunned. Doors cracking statue like an egg. Choking dust fills the room, heralding an arrival: An even bigger living statue, the gigantic paterfamilias, large enough for the ceilings. The living sons and daughters statues healed by the dust.

A deal is made: Tapper the Trader offers his favorite daughter Little Yil to the father-god in exchange for passage. Fleeing with Yil at the last moment.

A desperate race through newly-illuminated passages. Captain Finn finding  A stone carving of present events as if they were history. The next panel: Brikor consumed by the hungry father-god.

Bronn finding crack in the wall, large enough for man, but not yak or warpenguin. Smell of safety on the other side.

Tamen Na’s hammer striking the crack 13 times, and him, the living made statue. What foul magic does the father god command?

The daughters’ song of bitter, undeniable exhaustion. Finn lunging into father-god’s grasp, so he might sleep devoured instead of Brikor.

Bronn’s raucous song of the north, countering the lullaby and stopping the sons and daughters.

Tamen Na remembering the deal between his ancestors of the father-god, offering himself as the seventh son. Stone peeled from skin like flakes of pastry.

Tapper and Little Yil, leading yaks down the mountain, laden with other treasures, other statues. A mighty haul!

This is a call to all companions of adventure! Tomorrow we take up arms against a sea of troubles!* Who shall we count among our number? Michael Miller Andy Hauge Miguel Zapico Aaron Feild Ray Otus Rob Deobald? Or rogues who have yet to push forward their names? Perhaps even the great and terrible wizard itself, Epidiah Ravachol? Only the morrow shall reveal the truth!

Let Us Tell a Tale…

Let Us Tell a Tale…
…of New Foes

• A tale in which the rogues face enemies none of them have ever heard of.

• Before the last thread is reincorporated, there must be at least one Discovery Phase in which the rogues are battling their new enemies.

Inspired by Steven Townshend's post, here are my favorite #ToneBones. The first pair are carved from stone, so I don't use them too often, but I really dig how the gray-green die can be Glum, Wolf or Envy depending on the game and the red can be Jovial, Blood or Rage. The second pair I have on me at all times in case of emergency Lore Phase, plus they are the dice I bought at GenCon 2009 for the express purpose of playtesting Swords Without Master back when it was called Sword Buddies.

Currently, there have been 7 games beyond Swords Without Master that have appeared in Worlds Without Master, and there are many more on the way. There's already enough to hold a convention, and don't think I haven't been considering that. I'm curious, how many of you have played some of the other games? How many of these games are in your to-play queue?

Jovial: Picked these up at Origins from the Q-Workshop booth and want to geek about them to anyone that will listen: a featherweight bone-colored JOVIAL die and a heavy, metal GLUM die!

Glum: Can't roll that glum die on a nice wood tabletop without getting divs (oops); dice tray or plastic surface only. Yowza.

BRAND THE WANDERER

BRAND THE WANDERER

All that deserves a name
The Companion: Brand always has a companion. Sometimes a friend in arms, sometimes a trusty hound or steed or hawk. Sometimes a girl. One by one they are taken away.

Feats heroic
Jovial: Gleaming sword to heart of foe, Brand invokes a word of doom.

Glum: Brand pronounces the whorling word of heart; the companion departs, obedient. They shall not fail.

Trick
Inevitable Foe: Shaodon the Man-Ape. More cunning than man, more brutal than beast. Uttering words of fell sorcery he murders Brand’s companions one by one.

Notes:
Ignorant of sorcery, Brand swings at shadows on a rudderless quest for vengeance. Simple and direct, Brand loves the open plain, the rich dark wine, the embrace of a girl, the drums of battle.

Brand swears that victory over the man-ape is his singular quest, but it is likely the quest itself that drives him, rather than its ending. Deep down perhaps he doesn’t want to succeed.
