#WhileTheWizardsAwayEdition

Good morning!

blatantly stealing Eppy's text

Here's our organizational thread. Comment here if you'd like to play this morning. Also mention whether you might want to be an Overplayer, and whether you've played Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:15 or 9:30 EDT to start the last group.

Feel free to enjoy some breakfast or brunch while playing.

Also, feel free to use the hashtag   #SundayAMSwords  should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

P.S. Got some tips on how to do this and links to useful files here: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/blog/2014/7/14/sunday-morning-swords

Barring unforeseen obstacles, I will be serving as Overplayer (first time!) for #SundayAMSwords this Sunday, August 31, at 9:00AM Eastern. I hope to see several of you there.

If you're thinking of playing, and have a link to the rogue you think you'll play, post it in the comments. You are perfectly free to change your mind and play a different rogue, or find yourself surprisingly awake on Sunday morning and leap upon the game unheralded. I'd just like to let That Which Must Be Named percolate through my subconscious for the next day or so!

Thanks. See you Sunday!

This place struck me as an interesting location for some Rogues to encounter. Perhaps a nice isolated place for worship or sorcery. Imagine the bells ringing out over the gardens and orchards.

Eric's Musings, part 4: Virtual table.

This one's not a question, it's more of an offering =)

I like some visual aids when playing via hangouts, so I made this google Draw document. It has space for threads, Rogue summaries, a reminder of tones and basic phases and counters for dice and tone. The screenshot below is in French, but here's a link to an English version in case it's useful to some of you.

2 Players?

2 Players?

A session of S/lay w/Me with my wife crashed and burned yesterday, and I started talking to her about Swords Without Master. We're planning to look over Swords's rules tonight, and see if we can adapt it to two players, and if we'd rather play SWM than S/w/M.

I remember you were working on a 2-player variant Epidiah Ravachol, has there been any more progress on that? Anything we could test for you?

I know about this thread down here: https://plus.google.com/112165300112510479765/posts/C77f7cqnRDM

One of the reasons I'm so in love with Swords is the writerly gameplay. Both the Overplayer and the Rogue player act as storytellers - it's like writing genre fiction together. But it doesn't seem to work for everyone.

One of my friends the other night felt uncomfortable at the idea of being both 'inside' and 'outside' her character. The lack of immersion jarred her. Has this happened to any of you? And if so, did you find a way to make it easier on the player?

Urban Adventures

Urban Adventures

I've been fortunate enough to have played a bunch of Swords lately and I've noticed that whether I'm Rogue or Overplayer, we almost never have action set in cities. I wonder why not? I would say almost half of classic Sword & Sorcery is urban! Lankhmar, anyone?

So let's list some awesome City Starters and get those urban adventures rolling!

* The Rogues begin play in a city built on the back of a mammoth beast that roams a deserted landscape, moving from water source to water source. If the dice declare Jovial, it's the water festival that spontaneously erupts whenever a new source is found. Often strangers are the ones chosen to be sacrificed to the Nyads of the spring. If the dice demand Glum, the city has only dregs left and the beast itself is sluggishly pulling the inhabitants towards nowhere in particular.

This rogue is inspired by Katsushiro from Seven Samurai, or really any young kid who's left a position of comfort to...

This rogue is inspired by Katsushiro from Seven Samurai, or really any young kid who's left a position of comfort to seek out adventure.

Sorut the Youngest

The fourth child of Sorut the Elder (after Sorut the Young, Sorut the Younger, and Jorra), he's about as far away from leading his rich, lazy, complacent tribe as anyone could be. He's forgotten, and resentful of the way his tribe has forgotten its past. He wants to reclaim lost glories of his people, and find a new path.

Feats Heroic --

Glum: He frowns and clams up, hides his face and moves on as quickly as possible; he slinks into the shadows, becomes part of the dark.
Jovial: He smiles toothily, eager to see a familiar face, and shakes the hand of the other perhaps a bit too vigorously. He slathers on the charm, perhaps a bit sloppily.

Trick: Locus: The Tomb of Ysaphan the Undying -- Sorut seeks out the lost tomb of the legendary progenitor of his tribe, and the undying spirit of Ysaphan that is rumored to be inhabiting it.

This Rogue has been inspired by the A Song of Ice and Fire character and this illustration of her, but is not an attempt to translate that character :-) she has just been played for the first time!

Nymeria of the Sands

All that is deserving of a name:
-the sun's heat and warmth, that never allows her to feel cold
-the Two Fangs, the only gift from a father she never knew
-a sight that sees the truth

The Feats Heroic
Glum: the Fangs hit swiftly and surely from the darkness. A whispered prayer, for the fallen.
Jovial: the right turn, a friendly guard, and Nymeria disappears in the chaotic crowd with a laugh.

Trick
Daughter of the desert: once per game, she contrarie the following phase to be a Rogue phase. Once per game, she can call the desert to her aid.
http://nikolayasparuhov.deviantart.com/art/Nymeria-Sand-462950168

The Scythian

The Scythian

Soraya, a whitish orb about the diameter of a gold coin, orbits the Scythian's head at about a palm's span. It casts light in phase with the actual moon, even indoors or underground.
Anahita, a smaller, browner sister moon which orbits the Scythian's body almost imperceptibly. When a fatal blow is struck, it swoops to intercede and block the attack, shattering to dust in the process. The dust continues to orbit and coalesces into a ring of asteroids and eventually into the moon again, ready to block another attack after a few days.
The Megatome, a large book full of mysterious sorceries and geometric patterns. The Scythian carries it on her back.
Daeva, small white sprites or angelic beings that occasionally follow the Scythian and offer help or advice. Often naive.
The Radif of Tamen-Na, an ancient religious song engraved on the hammer of the priest Tamen-Na.

Jovial Feat: The Scythian discusses her problems with new or old friends, gaining new perspectives through good company and conversation.
Glum Feat: The Scythian wanders alone, exploring unfamiliar places and quietly singing an ancient half-remembered melody to herself.

Born in Fire: Instead of waiting for a Discovery or Rogue's Phase, you may add one name to your list of named after surviving a Perilous Phase with the named.

Trick of Adroit Prowess: The Scythian can make friends with quickness...gaining information and favors from those who at first seemed unapproachable. (May request a Rogue's Phase showing this off.)

Trick of Canny Cognition: Entering a meditative state, the Scythian can experience the dreams of those around her, even while they are awake. (Before the Overplayer chooses a new phase, you may demand that it is a Discovery Phase that will not end until you have demonstrated your rogue’s unique insight.)

Unparalleled: replace Glum with Contemplative

Incantation - Slam down the Megatome and scribe its contents in reality. (Ritual of the Long Spell)

Tales
-The Scythian found a massive marble giant called Xeres the Massive while being chased by scavengers through a vast desert. Descending through its eye, her companions found a being of pure violet light suspended by weird gravities that took over Tamen-Na's mind, making him believe us to be viruses within the maze of the giant's body. Tamen-Na hunted us room to upside-down room until the Scythian was able to calm him through singing sacred (magical) songs from his hammer. This gave Kalkar enough time to break through to Xeres' heart room, where Tamen-Na leapt through and shattered the heart. During the journey the Scythian's life was (accidentally) saved by Sorut the Young.

-The Scythian and her companions Kthoh-Arok and Gammon snuck into the city-state of Gearbury, one of many on the Sea of Gears, sent there by Duke Agnes to recover a particular scepter: (https://plus.google.com/117516100985204134844/posts/bZVbBeL4UBm)
Kthoh-Arok "bypassed" the clockwork hounds guarding the place, then entered the decadent ballroom of a corpulent man attended by two psychic servants. Around the party, dancers were chained to pillars that rotated around the room in grooves. Using teamwork to fight off his various lizard-men guards, Gammon accidentally sent the ballroom plummeting towards the fires below the city. Fortunately the corpulent man used his excellent strength to grab the massive chain holding the ballroom up, and began pulling. Thus Kthoh-Arok was able to slash the scepter from his belt, while the Scythian freed his dancers. We then escaped through the stained skylight when Gammon blasted off.

Eric's Musing, part 2: Prep and inspiration

Eric's Musing, part 2: Prep and inspiration

Prep work. Do you do any worldbuilding beforehand? Thinking about these sessions, it seems to me that a few ideas on a piece of paper would have gone a long way towards building a more compelling backdrop. Something along the lines of what Michael Moorcock recommends for writing: a list of striking images that you can look at when framing scenes or answering questions.

Existing settings. I figure it'd be cool to play in a set world, say Kull's Atlantis, or Lankhmar or the Europe of Ulrich Von Bek and Solomon Kane (we all agree it's the same world, right?). Not that it's something I'd do right away - I'm too happy with making up worlds as we play. But anyway, what would you do differently?

Eric's Musings, part 1: Worldbuilding

Eric's Musings, part 1: Worldbuilding

So I've been overplaying twice this week with the basic rules and two separate groups of Rogue players, and now I'm full of questions. I'll post them one at a time over the next day or so.

Do you guys come up with story ideas beforehand, apart from a starting situation? I've started both my stories with no prep at all and felt the resulting backdrops were a bit bland. It's partly my fault for not bothering to use a random generator to name people and places, and failing to draw a map. What tricks do you use to make the world feel real?

Rogue: Oshala the Hex

Rogue: Oshala the Hex

All That Deserves a Name
Onyx: The powerful, ever-hungry spirit bound to both my left hand, and my unyieldingng will.
The Order of the Unblinking Flame: An arcane order whose arts I have learned, but whose precepts I scorn.
Udjai the Swift: The brother who disowned me the day I bound our ancestral spirit Onyx into my flesh.

The Feats Heroic
Glum: Clenching my ebon fist until crimson streaks begin to snake down my arm, I utter the curse of doom upon that which bars my path.
Jovial: Filling the tavern with the song of my exploits, no one notices as my fellows make off with the prize roast boar.

Trick
Adroit Prowess: Magical beings innately treat me as a being worthy of respect.

...and the rest is silence.

Epidiah Ravachol, I thought I saw a post from you asking for favourite moments from #SundayAMswords  games, but now I can't find it.  Anyway, here's mine:

The #nomadic #warlord with the #menagerie.  He acquired his beasts of burden by ransacking a zoo somewhere.  His raiders ride rhino's, giraffes, bears.  Elephants pull his wagons.  Kleptomaniacal monkeys follow in his wheel ruts.

I'm just gonna hashtag ALL the keys words here.

Has anyone tried doing Anime SwoM?

Has anyone tried doing Anime SwoM? I can't help but think that it would be incredible, just replace the tones with Wacky and Intense...

I've been watching Kill la Kill (questionable content acknowledged) and can't stop thinking about it could flow easily from that structure.

I was feeling guilty about my two Rogues before, so I did this.

I was feeling guilty about my two Rogues before, so I did this.

Last time I played my players called for an handout to streamline phases and the little quirks of the game.

I did this symply by copypasting the text of the game, with a slight reformatting and a little omissis, but otherwise without any relevant change.

I'll leave it here, do with it whatever you wish.

Ok, I'm starting to regret something.
The Hot Toys figure.

THE WEST BATMAN

All that Deserves a Name
Robin: Holy sidekick, Batman!
Belt o'Gadgets: Never without your Shark Repellant Bat-Spray
The Batcave: Nobody will find it behind that sign!
A bomb: Somedays you just can't get rid of it

Feats Heroic
Glum: He sit at his computer, pondering enigmas and finding the most probable solution
Jovial: KAPOW! SBAM! PUNCH!

Trick of the Trade
Best Detective in the World: The West Batman is the absolute best at deduction: What's yellow and writes? When's better to meet a turkey? Why an orange is like a belt? All of these are no match for his deductive skills!
Before the Overplayer chooses a new phase, you may demand that it is a Rogues’ Phase and that the Overplayer opens it with a demand that highlights your deductive abilities

#Augustroguechallenge

#Augustroguechallenge
I regret nothing, this is your fault, not mine.

TWILIGHT SPARKLE

All That Deserves a Name
Spike: Her friend, assistant, ward. Also, a baby dragon.
The Other Five: Fiive other ponies, bonded by indissoluble thread of friendship.
The Library: her kingdom, rich of lore and comfort

Heroic Feats
Frantic: Twilight panics and start trowing around books, spells and whatever surrounds her searching for the right bit of knowledge she is forgetting.
Jovial: Helped by her friends friendship, Twilight releases a purple ad white spell that saves the day.

Trick fo the Trade
No Frowns in Ponyville: Nobody is ever really Glum surrounded by ponies, but other things can, and will, upset Twilight. Thinking she is forgotting something is the worst among them.
Replace the Glum tone with a Frantic one

Between the Worlds Without Master website and the Dig a Thousand Holes website, it can get a little confusing as to which is the better place to send those most curious about the game. The solution I suggest is to send them to www.SwordsWithoutMaster.com and I'll make sure that domain name points to the most pertinent and up-to-date page about the game. At the moment, it just redirects folks to www.WorldsWithoutMaster.com/Games/ but who knows what the future holds.

The Wondrous Worlds of Sunday Morning Swords

The Wondrous Worlds of Sunday Morning Swords

A fabulous setting is arising from the #SundayAMSwords  games. A setting inspired at first by the post-apocalyptic adventures of Thundarr the Barbarian, but is now swiftly becoming its own beast. A beast without continuity, but with a growing history, nonetheless. Much like the pulps before it.

I have an urge to preserve some of it. To record the sites and monsters, the strangeness and villainy, the feats and sorcery, so that others can use them in their games. To offer them not as an account that must be adhered to, but as a worn mixtape that you know just how long you have to fast forward to get to the right spots.

This seems as good a place as any. So if you've played in a Sunday Morning Swords game, whether you've played with me or not, feel free to post a detail, a moment, a thread, an eidolon, etc. that made the game sing for you in the comments below.

Holy crap, I get to play a rogue for #SundayAMSwords !!!

Lord Malivrax: Last of the Neon Knights

All That Deserves a Name
The Well of Being: A jet black suit of armor that holds his soul to this plane.
Jackals of the Streets: A gang of mutants who have used sorcery to reanimate vehicles of the past.
The Unbending Light: His oath blade.

Feats Heroic
Jovial: Facing peril with an hearty laugh that echoes from deep within his hollow armor.
Glum: Possessed with a longing for the companionship of yore, when the neon knights were many and merry, Lord Malivrax seeks the quickest, quietest path to his doom.

Trick
Undenied: Jovial--Echoing from within the Well of Being, music builds to a crescendo and fills the battlefield with its glory.

Did we do good?

VANESSA DI FIBONIA

VANESSA DI FIBONIA

All That Deserves a Name
Valore: the gryphon she hatched two years ago, from an egg stolen from her noble father.
Promessa: the sword her friend gave her when she flew away
The City of Fibonia: Pearl of the Plains, City of Merchants, Nourishing Mother of the High Teacher, rich, marvellous, souless, bind by dusty rituals and customs, where everyone knows their place, and is forever bound to it.

Feats Eroic
Jovial: Vanessa stand still on Valore, her sword dripping the hot blood of her foes, a low grumble arouses from the gryphon's belly, her blue eyes gleam while the sun transforms her blood soaked hairs in red gold.
Glum: Silent wings from above, a swift cut and Promessa takes another life.

Feats Heroic
Horizon Stare: Vanessa grew restless and run away from a settled life, she become a rogue from a city were everyone knows their place and their role. A question haunts her: Why cannot I find peace in any place on land nor sea?

Not going to #GenCon ? But you're looking for Swords Without Master game this weekend anyway? Aaron Feild has you covered!

Check out the link below. They're organizing online games for those who can't make the big con. And our very own Aaron Feild is looking to overplay three (or possibly four, I'm not sure) games. Like a fucking trooper.

I wonder what would happen...if you used Swords to run a game about two drastically different universes crashing together and getting mixed up? For instance, something like LEGO and Film Noir, or Star Wars and heavy metal Vikings. Each universe involved in the smash-up gets a Mood to itself, emphasizing the elements of that universe which don't show up in the other universe. (For example, the LEGO universe could get Vibrant, while the Noir universe gets Brooding.)

The Overtone would indicate which of the two universes the current scene was favoring, while individual rolls get tinted with attributes of one universe or the other. Double the fun when characters start displaying the attributes of the other universe!

I'm planning on firing it up at 9 AM EDT as usual this Sunday, but we've had some interest from folks for a later game as well. Since, apparently, we all don't live on the east coast of the U.S.

Speaking of #GenCon , if you happen to be going, I suspect you might find a game or two of Swords happening at #GamesOnDemand . Maybe even some interesting hacks. I have no official information, so no promises, but I've heard rumors.

Canny Cognition - The Mutagenian Empire knew many things, and he has made himself a student of their philosophies and sciences. Perhaps the knowledge of that long ago Empire has some bearing on what's happening now.

I, unfortunately, will not be at #GenCon  this year. However, I will be right here online playing #SundayAMSwords  that weekend.

Anyone from here going to GenCon? Anyone going to GenCon thinking of playing a pick-up game of Swords with their fellow con-goers early Sunday morning?

I just wanted to plant that seed.

YouTube is littered with videos of folks who have practical experience with ancient and medieval weaponry and who have insights to share. As I come across them, I will unabashedly share them here. Feel free to do the same.

For Guardians without Galaxies I am thinking of changing the moods to

Hero
Criminal/Scumbag (name isn't final yet)

Good idea?

OH MY GOSH.

OH MY GOSH.

Use Swords Without Master...to run a Doctor Who story! It's all in the game already! A tale of weird, amazing places that swings from jovially goofy and adventurous to grimly serious and melancholic and back again. Incredible and fantastical visuals (motifs) that stick around and inspire. This would seriously be gold! It even works well if one of the players is a Time Lord and the rest aren't, because everyone still has the ability to contribute, depending on how the dice are passed.

All you need to do to prep specifically for it is to use weird sci-fi as simulacra and eidolons.

I'm writing that down on my list of things to try after I've given Overplayer a spin a couple of times.

I was combing the Internet for the more obscure toys of my youth that could be used for this month's challenge: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/blog/2014/8/1/august-eidolon-simulacrum-challenge

And I came across the snake-dude featured part way down this page. I didn't have him, but a friend of mine did. I had no idea it was a Manimal tie-in! There's plenty of adventure to have around this one. And Plaidstallions.com will suck you right into Internet if you're not careful.

Y'know, Swords would make for a fun LongCon-style game.

Y'know, Swords would make for a fun LongCon-style game. Have some back-to-back tales, with breaks in between. You could get a lot of play in.

I keep missing out on Sunday Morning Swords, but I may have my own opportunity to play today.

I keep missing out on Sunday Morning Swords, but I may have my own opportunity to play today. First, a question! How many rogues would you think is too many to play with?
I'd like to play this guy this morning.  It's early so I had trouble coming up with something original.

Sunday Morning Swords: 3 August 2014

Sunday Morning Swords: 3 August 2014

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread. Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:15 or 9:30 to start the last group. I will be a swing player, jumping in where needed to fill out the final groups so we can make sure we have 3-4 Rogue Players in each group.

Feel free to enjoy some breakfast or brunch while playing. I know I'll be having some coffee and toast with marmalade, myself.

Also, feel free to use the hashtag   #SundayAMSwords  should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

P.S. Got some tips on how to do this and links to useful files here: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/blog/2014/7/14/sunday-morning-swords

Attention all Sorcery! fans!

The first chapter in the Android version of Steve Jackson's* Sorcery! choose your own adventure saga is free on the Amazon Appstore at the moment! (compatible with both phones and tablets I believe)

* the UK one, not the GURPS one

I have yet to try it, but judging from the screenshots it's been adapted in a gorgeous way. I remember playing Sorcery! and it was weird and bizarre in a good way. Probably my first ever complete CYOA story, too.

And the Android/iOS version has the original John Blanche illustrations, too!

Grab it while it's free!

Oh HELL yeah.

Oh HELL yeah.

Name: Paradoxis

Eidolon or Simulacrum: Pharoid action figure http://that-figures.blogspot.com/2011/03/vintage-view-micronauts-pharoid.html http://visibleinnards.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=334

All That Deserves A Name:

The Sarkophagos Chamber.  A time-and-relative-dimension-in-space-traveling device, the Sarkophagos Chamber can translocate from one world and time to another, along with its pilot and any living creatures touching it (so manybe a half dozen human-sized creatures, tops.)  It can't do this too often; once transported to a new world/time Paradoxis is stuck there for a while.

Illuminate.  This is a luminescent plate with an image of a human face, set into Paradoxis's chest armor; it is a sentient mechanical being with powers of occult perception, and dispenses wise advice which Paradoxis often ignores.  Illuminate can channel the power of the Sarkophagos Chamber to achieve minor time-bending effects in his vicinity, but this drains power and will lengthen the time the Sarkophagos Chamber must rest between translocations.

Archaeopolis.  Paradoxis' home city on his home world, a super-advanced civilization; long dead, its inhabitants mummified and its super-science dormant.  He left it during its golden age in the Sarkophagos Chamber to seek out the future and was unable to ever return to its living days.

Scarab.  A ray gun which projects destructive white light, powered by Paradoxis's bio-energy.

Tones:

Feats Heroic.  Jovial -- Paradoxis's crystalline skin lights up and he dodges and weaves as Scarab removes one enemy after another from the field.  Glum -- Illuminate creates a slow-time field.  Enemies move at half speed and all sounds drop down an octave.  Paradoxis can move calmly among his opponents and bring them down in a calculated manner.

Trick:

Canny Cognition -- Illuminate is able to sense future possibilities that lie dormant in the world around him.  He can show what will, or could, or might happen in the future with respect to people, places, and things.
