Sunday Morning Swords: 27 September 2015

#ExamsOnTuesdayEdition

Good morning!

Here's our organizational thread. Comment below if you're interested in playing this morning and mention if you're comfortable being an Overplayer and whether or not you have play Swords before.

When we get an Overplayer and three or four Rogue Players, those players will run off and start their hangout. For now, let's focus on getting everyone into a group. We'll probably wait until 9:30 EDT to start the last group. If you can't make that, check back in a few hours. Another one will fire up at 9 AM PDT for those who wake at a more civilized time.

Feel free to use the hashtag #SundayAMSwords should you desire to chat about your game on the social medias.

P.S. Got some tips on how to do this and links to useful files here: http://www.worldswithoutmaster.com/blog/2014/7/14/sunday-morning-swords

A Shock: and Swords Without Master Mash-Up

A Shock: and Swords Without Master Mash-Up

Take Swords with the following alterations to the Threads:

1. Morals are now Shock:-style Minutiae that carry a consequence. Instead of writing the lesson associated with the consequence, write the Minutiae itself.

2. Mysteries are now Shock:-style Minutiae that stymie. Instead of writing a question about what stymied you, write the Minutiae itself.

3a. Motifs elements should be about those moments that exemplify alienness, the petty made wondrous, or the wondrous made petty. Each element is also an intersection of a Shock and an Issue. This is like the grid in Shock: but you do not determine the Shock and Issue before play. Instead, decide on the Shock and Issue when you write the element and write them next to the element.

3b. Instead of echoing elements in later Motif threads, one element on each Motif after the first must intersect with a Shock or an Issue from a previous Motif thread.

I suspect that this would produce stories with more of a Swords feel than a Shock: one. Stuff like Les Maîtres du temps. And I would probably give each planet it's own set of tones, each Rogue a set of tones according to their homeworld, and if they happen to be spending most of their time in a vessel they can call home, I'd give it its own set of tones as well. Or perhaps I go too far.

Worlds Without Master Long Con

Worlds Without Master Long Con

I'm organizing a 4-session Long Con game composed of games released in Worlds Without Master taking place in one shared world. There will be three consistent players besides myself.

I'm planning SWM as the backbone, with a short session present in 3 out of the 4 time slots. My goal is to explore at least half of the released games and teach most of the Rituals from SWM.

Slot 1
Set the palette (from Microscope)
SWM
A Scoundrel in the Deep (2 concurrent games)

Slot 2
SWM
Wolfspell

Slot 3
Enter the Avenger
Masks of the Mummy Kings

Slot 4
Player Choice (perhaps No Longer With Us, or whatever's new if Eppy releases an issue in October)
SWM or Player Choice

Does anyone have any experience offering Worlds games back to back? What else should I be considering to make this a cool experience?

There was some chatter over the weekend about a #SaturdayAMSwords counterpart to #SundayAMSwords, which I obviously believe is an astoundingly good idea. The only reason SundayAM is SundayAM is because that was the time that best fit my own personal schedule. But we are legion--ovver 400 strong! And not everyone is going to have my own personal schedule.

So tell me, if you were to partake in the occasional online game of Swords, when would be the most convenient time for you? Bearing in mind that we're definitely going to keep #SundayAMSwords going and we'll definitely sweep across the calendar eventually allowing you to join a Swords game at every moment of every day should you so choose. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. This, all the other worlds, shall be ours for the taking.

Some interesting things said about Swords Without Master here! I'm particularly fond of the Feats Heroic in haiku form and the application of the Unparalleled Trick.

Speaking of Swords, the G+ community is now riddled with 400 rogues! https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104194230537983273846

FOLKS!!!

FOLKS!!!

I'm reading Michael Miller's playtest draft for #WithGreatPower   #MasterEdition  and I cannot wait to give this one a go! I'm going to go shout about this elsewhere over the upcoming week, but I thought you'd all be particularly interested.

Also, I need to publicly congratulate Michael on his Editorial Mandate section. And I need to do it before a crowd that has an inkling of just what a pain in the ass that section can be. This is the superheroic counterpart to Swords' Affordances and Constraints section. It's a necessary component of the game, and one that people can easily ignore as they read over it. But with section headers like Splash Page Supremacy and Unfathomable Psychic Depths they're going to pay attention.

Swords has been out for a year and a half now, #SundayAMSwords  is going strong after a full year, the game has been featured in the Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2015/jun/19/the-joy-of-reading-role-playing-games), and it's well on its way to becoming my best selling game.

It's time to take a few victory laps.

Here are two rituals for when you've clearly reached the story's end, but you want just one more moment to celebrate (or soberly reflect depending on the die roll) with the rogues before you fade to black.

The Ritual of the Triumph
When you are in the End Game and you find that the story has reached its conclusion, but no one has reincorporated yet, you may invoke the Ritual of the Triumph. Request that whoever has the power to do so ends the phase now. Then demand a Triumphant Rogues' Phase from the Overplayer.

All demands in a Triumphant Rogues' Phase must be about spectacle, celebration, or reflection. "Show us how trick the wily wizard into buying us all drinks." "Show us how you boast of these recent deeds." "Show us how the village receives us as we return with their stolen cattle." "Show us how you mourn the loss of your loyal steed."

You must end the game on this phase and during this phase each Rogue Player must have a single demand made of them.  This means that one Rogue Player must choose not to reincorporate and this Rogue Player cannot make the final roll. All other Rogue Players must reincorporate.

The Ritual of the Spoils
When you are in the End Game and you find that the story has reached its conclusion, but no one has reincorporated yet, you may invoke the Ritual of the Spoils. Request that whoever has the power to do so ends the phase now. Then demand a Spoilful Discovery Phase from the Overplayer.

All discoveries in a Spoilful Discovery Phase must be about treasure earned, regrets revealed, or wonders beheld. The must not extend the current story, but may hint at adventures yet to come. "I find a small, jade idol in the shape of a tortoise. Who might pay the most for such a trinket?" "In the smouldering wreck, to my surprise, I find my long lost brother's locket. What small hope do I have that he yet lives?" "As we stand on the cliff's edge surveying the lush valley below, we see a crystal pyramid overgrown with vines and jungle weeds. What happens when the light of the dawn first shines upon it?"

You must end the game on this phase and during this phase each Rogue Player must make a single discovery.  This means that one Rogue Player must choose not to reincorporate and this Rogue Player cannot make the final roll. All other Rogue Players must reincorporate.
