So, in our #SundayAMSwords game this morning, we finished up with a "Roses & Thorns" feedback session. Charlie Vick suggested that baldly stating that a bunch of rogues were just together at the start of a game lacked in-fiction context. It didn't give a feeling of these being compatriots-in-arms with a past history.
What sprang to mind after the chat, was that you could introduce a Prologue to the story, or "That Which Has Come Before." You don't even need any new rules. Just use the "The Ritual of the Swift & Recurrent Blade" from the Advanced Techniques section, and set it up to take place before the opening scene.
It would certainly affect the pacing of the game, but it might address that specific issue.
