The game is awesome but we definitely encountered some stumbling blocks on the way. A couple players are fairly new to RPGs (especially rules-light, narrative-heavy games), so the worldbuilding opportunities of the Discovery Phase kinda melted their brains. They rose to the challenge but it was a big adjustment on their part. They loved the challenge though!
We also found the endgame/reincorporation mechanics to be a little confusing, mostly because I as the Overplayer hadn't done enough reading and pondering for that stuff. All the same, it was a wonderful first game. Everyone wants to play again!

Are Bold and Beguiling your two tones?
ReplyDeleteI love the descriptions and example imagery of the tones, especially major key vs minor key.
ReplyDeleteIndeed they are, Adam Minnie! Respectively, Bold tracks to the wuxia vibes and Beguiling tracks to folklore. As I told Eppy over on Twitter, I was kind of stunned how much work went into settling on just those two little words. Tones are impressive in that they need to be both potent and broad.
ReplyDeleteEli Kurtz Right. I've tried hacking a few other tone sets, and man is it tough to get right.
ReplyDeleteTones are the hardest thing!
ReplyDeleteI ended up cheating with With Great Power, changing the emphasis of the tones from phase to phase.
Yep, same here. I'm playing with various combinations during playtests. And what's more difficult : I play in French, so getting feedback is more difficult. But those two Tones definitely set the game (and yet it's such a pleasure to alter them via a Trick or some Encounter ...)
